Research & Development Institutes and private labs are supporting exploration across many industries in Thunder Bay. This research and innovation is assisting in the diversification of Thunder Bay’s economy and improving health care for Northern communities. These institutes are also securing their future development by encouraging greater participation of younger generations in careers based on sciences and math.

Lakehead University was ranked as the top Canadian University for Undergraduate research and Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre was included in Canada's Top 40 Research Hospitals.

Its mandate is to facilitate clinical research strategic to regional health  care  needs. Recent Investment in Research

The Government of Canada invested $1.85 million to enable the Thunder Bay Regional Health Research Institute to purchase equipment and implement new technologies in the area of probe development and bio-marker exploration (PD&BE).

The Government of Canada in partnership with the City of Thunder Bay and the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Foundation's Exceptional Cancer Care Campaign funded a cyclotron that will produce medical isotopes that will improve cancer care for patients in Northwestern Ontario and will allow for cutting-edge research that works to find new, more efficient, ways of diagnosing and treating cancers.

The Government of Ontario invested $5 million in Lakehead University to create the Centre for Advanced Studies in Engineering and Sciences which celebrated its grand opening in November 2018. This 42,000 square foot facility includes new laboratories and equipment to support the university's advanced research and training needs.
