There is a wide variety of employment opportunities to work as a rehab professional in Thunder Bay. Careers in physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and speech-language pathology can be easily found in both hospital settings and private practice. Wages for these rehabilitation professionals are typically higher in Ontario than most other provinces.

Incentives

Rehabilitation Professional Incentive Grant

An incentive grant of up to $5,000 per eligible year, to a maximum of $15,000, paid over a three-year period is available to audiologists, chiropodists, occupational therapists, physiotherapists and speech-language pathologists who establish their practice in Northern Ontario and accept full-time positions. Physiotherapy

 Licensing

Physiotherapists in Ontario must be registered with the College of Physiotherapists of Ontario (CPO), the provincial regulating body for the physiotherapy profession.  Visit the CPO website online to learn more about career pathways to physiotherapy and to register as a member: www.collegept.org.

Physiotherapists who have received training outside of Canada must have their credentials assessed by the Canadian Alliance of Physiotherapy Regulators (CAPR), to become eligible to write the licensing exam. Learn more about credentialing by CAPR on their website: www.alliancept.org.

Voluntary associations include the Northwestern Ontario District chapter of the Ontario Physiotherapy Association, a branch of the Canadian Physiotherapy Association.

To become a Speech-Language Pathologist in Ontario, a relevant bachelor’s degree as well as a Master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology is required. The provincial governing body for the SLP profession is the College of Audiologists and Speech-Language Pathologists of Ontario (CASLP). Contact the CASLP for information about accredited programs and pathways to the SLP profession for graduates of international programs.

The Ontario Association of Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists is a voluntary provincial organization for SLP professionals.
