Psychiatrists

In Thunder Bay, both major healthcare organizations, St. Joseph’s Care Group (SJCG) and Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre (TBRHSC), and are actively recruiting psychiatry professionals for general adult psychiatry as well as in the areas of child and adolescent, outpatient and addictions, developmental disability, and assertive community treatment. There are also opportunities for private practice.

 Licensing

Psychiatrists in Ontario must be certified with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and registered with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO).

The Canadian Psychiatric Association is the national voluntary professional association for psychiatrists in Canada.

St. Joseph’s Care Group (SJCG) offers a broad range of programs and services in addictions and mental health, rehabilitative care & chronic disease management, and seniors’ health in Thunder Bay.  It is the single largest provider of mental health and addictions services in Northwestern Ontario, with programs in Concurrent Disorders Rehabilitation, Mental Health & Addiction Outpatient services and Outreach, Mental Health Housing & Employment, Chronic Pain Management and other outpatient services, and Mental Health Rehabilitation.

Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre (TBRHSC) is a world-class academic health sciences centre, a recognized leader in patient and family-centred care and one of the top research hospitals in Canada. Its mental health program includes adult mental health, and forensic mental health. It also has a Child and Adolescent Mental Health Unit for youth.

 Incentives

Northern and Rural Recruitment and Retention Initiative (NRRRI)
Grant of $80,000 distributed over four years to family physicians and specialists starting a full-time practice in Thunder Bay. Physicians must apply and be approved for the program prior to their start date. Visit the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care website to learn more and apply.
